Profile of AhrauraAhraura city belongs to Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. It is sited at a distance of 55 km from the district headquarters Mirzapur and 353 km away from the state capital Lucknow. People of all caste and communities reside in the city. People in the city speak Hindi, Urdu, Agariya, Awadhi, Baghelkhand, Bagheli and Bhojpuri. The city homes many popular and historical tourist spots. Ahraura has no big industrial establishment so this region is marked as one of the most backward industrial regions in Uttar Pradesh and the district is currently receiving funds from backward regions grant fund program. The city was once a popular trading centre of forest products and agriculture products. The city homes government hospital which offers quality health care services. Shree Sadayatan Pandey also called as Badey Sarkar was one of the most popular landlords in Ahraura as he owned most of the lands in the city from which he helped many poor people in the city.

Geography of Ahraura

The city is elevated at a height of 87 meters above sea level which is about 285 feet and the city has its coordinates at 25.02° North latitude and 83.02° East longitude. The cities close to Ahraura are Mughalsarai, Robertsganj, Mohania, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Tulasi and Chandauli. The localities surrounding Ahraura are Maghwa, Sarai, Roshanher and Manikpur. Summers are hot and winters are very cool in the city.


As per 2011 census, Ahraura city had a total population of about 24,967 out of which 13,203 are male and 11,764 are female. The density of population in the city is 6241.8 inch per km sq in an area of 4 km sq. The female sex ratio of the city is 891 out of 1000 male. The kids in the age group of 0 to 6 years are 3837 i.e. 15.37 %. The child sex ratio in the city is 930 girls out of 1000 boys which is higher than the Uttar Pradesh state's average of 902. The literacy rate in the city is 71.16 % which is higher than the Uttar Pradesh state average literacy rate of 67.68 %. In this the male literacy rate constitutes 79.12 % and the female literacy rate constitutes 62.17 %. About 19.95 % of the total population belongs to schedule caste and the city has nil schedule tribe caste. Ahraura Nagar Palika Parishad comprises of 3980 homes. Nearly 8,323 people of the total population are employed out of which 6242 are male and the rest of 2081 are female. In it nearly 74.16 % of people are engaged in min work and the rest of 25.64 % in marginal work.

The city operates under the Mirzapur division of state administration. Ahraura is a municipal board; the Nagar Palika Parishad of Ahraura forms the local self-government in the city. Including Ahraura the district has a total of 3 nagar palika. The nagar palika is divided into 25 wards for which elections are held every 5 years and a representative is elected by the people. From the elected ward members one ward member is chosen and posted as the President of Nagar Palika. The wards of Ahraura nagar palika comes under Chunar sub division.

Ahraura city has all the qualities to be one of the finest tourist spot in the district. The city homes three popular temples namely Durga Devi Temple in the south edge of Ahraura, Bhandari Devi Temple in north edge of Ahraura and Radha Krishna temple in the centre of the city. The city is bounded by forest, hills/mountains and many beautiful waterfalls. Lekhaniya Dari is one of the popular waterfalls on the border of Ahraura. The mountain on Ahraura has pink colour rocks which are believed to be a rare pink marble. A Temple in Ahraura has a stone writing of Emperor Ashoka.
